[edit] New Home
We have a new home. Instead of wiki.dccforall.com, you can now find the DCCWiki at dccwiki.com or many of it's aliases (dccwiki.info, dccwiki.ws, dccwiki.org, dccwiki.net, dccwiki.us, dccforall.com, wiki.dccforall.com). Of course, any links from dccforal.com OR wiki.dccforall.com will automagically forward to dccwiki.com. Feel free to update your bookmarks and/or links, but if you don't, the links will work just fine. Comments? Like the shorter URL?
I'm always looking for way to improve this site. The short url is just one of many. If you have any other ideas, please let me know here, or on my talk page. TazzyTazzy 15:14, 8 August 2006 (EDT)
[edit] Favicon
Not showing in my browser. Is there one? James
- I've not developed one. If you want to, I'll put it up so it'll be used. TazzyTazzy 12:34, 15 December 2006 (EST)
- Favicon created, and uploaded. Thanks for the image. If you want to try dfferent ones, let me know. I don't have any photo tools on this computer, but i think the DCC part should be bigger? Or, maybe go from the upper left to the lower right would allow for more bolder font? I don't know, i'm not a graphics person at all. I do like this!! :-) Thank you. Glad you liked it. I can try again in a while - tad busy at present. Couple of things: wanted to keep the 'W' prominant but different to the main Wikipedia Icon, so made it similar, bigger and red. FYI the font I used is Garamond. On making the 'DCC' more prominant, well I can have a go. The font size I used filled the full width (near enough) of the image. So could try and make it bolder, taller and perhaps reposition it - top, middle and diagonal are possible options. I'll see what looks OK when made 'Icon' size - one thing in particular - can I read it! --Jamesoc 05:16, 18 December 2006 (EST) (or 10:16 GMT 'cos I'm in the UK)
[edit] Why DCCWiki and not Wikipedia itself?
There is some useful material in this Wiki but it also duplicates what is available under Wikipedia itself at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Command_Control You may not welcome the suggestion but it would be far more valuable to the world DCC community if you were to transfer your material to Wikipedia rather than this standalone site. Don't forget that you (and me and everyone else) own the material in Wikipedia as long as it's an original contribution.
- I like having a separate WIKI for DCC as our information doesn't get lost within Wikipedia. Also, I don't get lost when looking up information here or sidetracked nearly as much. It's also easier to search here without having to sort through non-DCC related content. Whomever created this DCC WIKI has put alot of time into this and I'm sure there are many like me that really appreciate it. Also, the page you listed doesn't contain anywhere near the content already available here.
- I agree, and I'm glad people are finding this site useful. I started this mostly because my brain was getting full and was starting to forget various aspects of DCC - I thought a WIKI would be a great place for me to store my information for DCC. Originally, I just had one large word file, and it started to get confusing. Anyway, since then, other people have started using the DCC Wiki and it's beginning to become a great place to find information. Right now, it just has the basics, but it's starting to get more popular as people learn about it, and contribute to it.
- Although I use Wikipedia on a regular basis, I was scared to put my information there as searching for various aspects of DCC related content would be quite difficult. I think simply having a link from the Wikipedia DCC article to the DCC Wiki is great to point people here. The folks over at Wikipedia set up and interwiki link to us. Just precede any wiki link with "dcc:" and their website will automatically link to us. For example, to link to the decoder page here from Wikipedia, just simple use [[dcc:decoder|decoder]]. I've changed the link name so that the "dcc:" part isn't displayed. The reverse is also true, if you want to link back to Wikipedia, you simply precede the link with "wp:" and DCCWiki will link back to them. Very simple. So, now, we can search one website and not have to filter out all the non-DCC content. Also, since this site is for DCC and trains we can have current news/events right on the front page, as well as having a quick link to a list of common topics. TazzyTazzy 17:35, 31 January 2007 (EST)
[edit] Incorrect links in Wikipedia itself.
The main Wikipedia page on Digital Command Control had many of the page links pointing to this site rather than other Wikipedia pages. We may agree or disagree whether all the material in this Wiki should be in Wikipedia itself but to add page links to an external site (via a prefix) which purport to be standard Wikipedia links is reprehensible. Thankfully one of the main Wikipedia editorial team has now removed them.
The external links for the above page include a link to this Wiki which is perfectly acceptable and this should be added to any other Wikipedia page on DCC.
I suggest if they don't exist already that pages are created for the key components such as DCC Decoder, Command Station etc. in Wikipedia itself and all with the above external link to this Wiki. Furthermore anything which is non DCC specific (e.g. track, locomotive, bus, etc.) should also remaining in Wikipedia, and use the prefix notation in this Wiki to link to it. Without this there will be an unhelpful duplication of material and the need to search more than one site for general model railway information - this being of course my argument for it all being in Wikipedia.
